Status Metrology has achieved formal technical approval to supply the Kreon Technologies Onyx Portable Measuring Arm with Skyline Wide Laser Scanner for use within Jaguar Land Rover (JLR).

Following structured evaluation under JLR’s internal metrology standard JLR-STN-154450, the system has been confirmed as capable of meeting demanding automotive stamping and Body-in-White (BIW) measurement tolerances. This approval marks the first formal successful process testing of the Kreon Onyx portable arm within JLR in the UK.

Why This Evaluation Matters

In the automotive sector, portable measuring arms must demonstrate more than flexibility, they must consistently meet strict OEM capability standards.

JLR’s evaluation formed part of a broader strategic review of portable metrology systems, ensuring:

  • Long-term serviceability as legacy systems become obsolete
  • Compatibility with established PolyWorks inspection workflows
  • Proven repeatability and accuracy in BIW applications
  • Alignment with OEM Measurement Systems Analysis (MSA) standards

Rather than being linked to a single vehicle programme, this was a wider technical sign-off for use within JLR and by extension, their supply chain.

The Evaluation Process

Testing was conducted in line with JLR’s Metrology Strategy protocol (JLR-STN-154450).

The Kreon Onyx system was assessed using JLR’s certified tailgate artefact, comprising:

  • 186 measurement features
    • 90 surface points
    • 55 trim edge points
    • 41 holes and slots
  • A minimum of 10 repeat measurements per feature
  • Full RPS alignment procedure
  • Capability assessment to AIAG MSA methodology

All measurements were captured using PolyWorks, already embedded within JLR’s metrology environment.

We’re pleased to confirm that the Kreon Technologies Onyx Portable Measuring Arm with Skyline Wide Laser Scanner has achieved formal technical approval for use within Jaguar Land Rover

Performance Results

Under JLR’s evaluation criteria, the Kreon Technologies Onyx Portable Measuring Arm with Skyline Wide Laser Scanner achieved:

Capability Tolerances:

  • ±0.745mm – Surface Points
  • ±0.777mm – Trim Edges
  • ±0.556mm – Features (holes & slots)

Gauge Capability:

  • Average Cgk ≥ 1.33 across feature types

Maximum Bias Values:

  • 0.051mm
  • 0.034mm
  • 0.016mm

The evaluation benchmark was set against a stringent 20% tolerance rule, which the Kreon Technologies Onyx Portable Measuring Arm consistently and significantly outperformed. The official report concludes that the system is capable of measuring to all required stamping tolerances within JLR’s evaluation framework.

What This Means for Automotive Manufacturers

OEM approval demonstrates that the Kreon Technologies Onyx Portable Measuring Arm with Skyline Wide Laser Scanner delivers:

  • Proven BIW measurement capability
  • Repeatable, validated accuracy
  • Seamless PolyWorks integration
  • A future-proof alternative as existing arm fleets age
  • A portable solution that meets structured automotive MSA criteria

For Tier 1 and Tier 2 suppliers, alignment with OEM-approved measurement platforms can reduce risk during programme launches and supplier validation audits.

Strategic Significance for Status Metrology

This approval confirms Status Metrology as an approved supplier of portable measuring arms to Jaguar Land Rover. It also reinforces our position as a trusted provider of high-performance portable metrology systems for demanding automotive environments.

The successful sign-off within a premium OEM setting demonstrates that the Kreon Technologies Onyx Portable Measuring Arm with Skyline Wide Laser Scanner is not simply a flexible workshop tool, it is a validated measurement solution capable of operating within structured OEM standards.
