Calibration and Verification

We all know that a calibration or verification procedure should be incorporated into your quality management system if you use and operate a CMM. As routine calibration is critical for maintaining the accuracy and repeatability of CMM measurements. Additionally, it assists with:

  1. Compliance. Many industries, including aerospace, automotive, and medicine, require strict adherence to quality assurance standards, such as ISO 10360. Regular CMM calibration helps meet these standards, avoiding compliance issues.
  2. Extends Machine Life. As part of the calibration process, various components of a CMM are checked and adjusted, which can prevent wear and detect potential problems at an early stage.
  3. Customer Confidence. Many clients rely on calibration records as evidence of accuracy and quality, which enhances their trust and may lead to a higher level of business.

What is CMM Verification?

To verify the accuracy and validity of a machine, a series of measurement tests are conducted using a known artefact. This process provides an overall accuracy statement, which may or may not be in accordance with previously stated operating standards. As a fact-finding exercise, the process does not involve any machine adjustments.

What is CMM Calibration?

Calibration of CMMs differs from verification in that it involves a greater number of measurements against a known artifact. It also aims to establish the accuracy / validity of a machine. In the process of calibration, physical or digital adjustments may be required to ensure the CMM is returned to, or is returned closer to, a previously stated operating standard.

Why consider a UKAS accredited Calibration

A UKAS-accredited CMM calibration is generally considered superior to non-accredited CMM verification for several reasons:

Traceability to National Standards: UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) accreditation ensures that the calibration process is traceable to a national standard. This traceability confirms that the calibration meets strict accuracy requirements and can be reliably reproduced.

Rigorous Standards Compliance: UKAS-accredited calibration providers must comply with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 the international standard for testing and calibration laboratories. This standard sets stringent guidelines on the calibration process, competence, impartiality, and consistency, ensuring a high level of precision.

Greater Measurement Uncertainty Control: Accredited providers must rigorously document and control measurement uncertainty, giving more confidence in the accuracy and reliability of the CMM. Non-accredited verification may not fully account for measurement uncertainties, increasing the risk of inaccurate measurements.

Regular Assessments and Audits: UKAS conducts regular audits of accredited calibration providers to verify their compliance with standards. This external oversight ensures continued quality and reliability, something non-accredited services may lack.

Industry and Client Confidence: A UKAS-accredited calibration certificate is often a requirement in highly regulated industries like aerospace, automotive, and medical devices. Accreditation reassures clients and regulatory bodies that the calibration is performed to the highest standards, which non-accredited verification cannot guarantee.

Legal and Regulatory Compliance: UKAS-accredited calibrations are recognised internationally and are often required for regulatory compliance. Accredited calibration can prevent potential legal issues arising from non-compliance with industry standards.

Risk Mitigation: Using UKAS-accredited calibrations can reduce the risk of measurement errors, product recalls, or compliance failures. Non-accredited verification lacks the same level of oversight and rigor, potentially increasing the risk to quality and reputation.

In short, UKAS-accredited calibration provides a higher level of assurance in measurement accuracy, consistency, and regulatory compliance compared to non-accredited verification.
