Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) Training

In modern manufacturing, a clear understanding of engineering drawings is essential to ensure components function correctly and assemble as intended. Without it, misinterpretation can lead to rework, rejected parts and increased production costs.

Alongside our CMM software training, we offer a 1-day introduction to Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), designed to help individuals interpret and apply technical drawing information in practice.

GD&T provides a clearer way of defining how a part should function, going beyond simple dimensions to better communicate design intent.

The course takes a practical, hands-on approach and is suitable for engineers, inspectors and anyone working with technical drawings.

What is GD&T?

Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is widely recognised as the universal language of engineering drawings. It defines part geometry by specifying not only size, but also form, orientation, location and allowable variation.

Unlike traditional dimensioning, GD&T defines how features relate to each other in three-dimensional space, ensuring components function correctly and assemble as intended.

Without a clear understanding of GD&T, drawings can be misinterpreted. This can result in:

  • Components that appear correct in size but fail to assemble properly
  • Increased rework and rejected parts
  • Unnecessary production costs and delays

GD&T helps remove ambiguity by ensuring a consistent and clearly understood specification across design, manufacturing and inspection.

About the Course

This 1-day course introduces the principles of measurement, engineering drawings and GD&T, supported by practical examples.

It covers how these elements are applied in manufacturing and inspection, including:

  • Fundamentals of measurement, including accuracy, precision and measurement uncertainty
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings, including dimensions, tolerances and projection methods
  • GD&T principles, including datums, feature control frames and common geometric tolerances
  • An overview of inspection methods and measurement equipment, including conventional tools and CMMs

The course is delivered using practical examples to support real-world application.

Private GD&T Course

FAQs

Yes, this course is designed as an introduction and is suitable for beginners. It provides a practical overview of GD&T and engineering drawings, making it appropriate for those with little or no prior experience.

The course is delivered over one day and provides a focused introduction to GD&T principles, supported by practical examples and real-world application.

GD&T is used to define how features of a component relate to each other, ensuring parts function correctly and assemble as intended. In practice, it is applied during inspection and measurement to confirm components meet the requirements specified on engineering drawings.
