Cybersecurity and the Microsoft Switch off – What Does This Mean For PC-DMIS?

Microsoft has announced that after 14^th October 2025 it will no longer be providing free software updates for Windows 10; Whether that’s in the form of technical assistance, Windows Update or security fixes. Whilst PC’s will still work – it is highly recommended by Microsoft and our software experts here at Status Metrology to move over to Windows 11 before that deadline. Here is why:

‘So, What Does This Mean for My CMM Software?’

This change will affect PC-DMIS users connected to Windows 10. Under the guidelines of Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, it is mandatory to run the latest available supported software to avoid any potential security vulnerabilities such as viruses and malware. For PC-DMIS software users you will need to update to Windows 11 and install the latest version of PC-DMIS in order to ensure everything remains compatible and guarantee your software continues to run efficiently and securely.

‘What Happens if I Don’t Update to Windows 11?’

• Automatic Non-Compliance: When it comes to Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus certifications, the use of unsupported OS (Windows 10) will violate the requirements, meaning you will fail the Cyber Essentials (and Plus) certification if you continue using Windows 10 after October 14^th 2025.

• Insurance Risk: As a result of failing Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus certifications, you may not be able to claim for damages due to cyber threats/crimes

• Loss of Official Support: When Microsoft officially leave Windows 10 behind, there will be no continued support, meaning if you want to make use of all PC-DMIS features and be eligible for any version updates – it is essential you get PC-DMIS updates onto Windows 11. (We can help with this!)

• Software Instability: Running newer versions of PC-DMIS on an unsupported OS increases the risk of data corruption, software crashes and malware interfering with metrology operations.
