5 Top PC-DMIS Alignment Tips

PC-DMIS was created to simplify the inspection process when using different metrology equipment. The benefits of this program are hard to underestimate. One of them is excellent and quick alignment.

While it’s easy to leave the aligning job to the program, it’s important to consider manual aligning as well. In order to achieve excellent results, CMM operators take advantage of different approaches.

When it comes to PC-DMIS, alignment is fast and accurate. However, some tips can make the inspection process easier and more precise, especially considering numerous alignment methods.

1) Considering Manual Measuring

Even though PC-DMIS software takes care of the basic alignment, it’s still a good idea to line parts up “square” to the CMM axis to minimise the probe’s thrusting, especially for complicated projects which requires numerous probe angles.

2) Using For Verification

If you are in doubt about the measurement, you can run the alignment twice to make sure nothing has changed over a certain period of time. Running the repeat verification can save time in the long run by ensuring accuracy and repeatability.

3) Clicking The QuickAlign Button

If you want to create DCC (Direct Computer Control) or manual alignment based on the features you‘ve selected in the measurement routine, just click one button. “QuickAlign” will provide the selected alignment automatically.

PC-DMIS bases its measurements on ASME Y14.5’s CD&T datum precedence principles and common alignment types. You can take advantage of the alignments exported directly into the Edit Window.

4) Following The Basics

Find three points to complete a full alignment. For example, plane, line, and point, which satisfy the minimum requirements.

Each point group needs to be measured with the CMM moving in one axis. Each group has to be in a different axis.

• Plane on top, 3 hits min, moving in the Z axis
• Line on front, 2 hits min, moving in the Y axis
• Point on “right” or “left”, moving in X axis

5) Trying Datum Reference Frame Alignment

While you won’t find this option by name in the software, you can set it up in a few seconds. Within the alignment utilities, find the “auto align” button in the lower right corner of the screen.

• Measure all your datum and assign the datum references (they’ll all be listed in the feature list in the “alignment utilities”).
• Select them in the order of datum precedence.
• Click the “auto align” button.
