Formula One First Tier Supplier
The Formula One industry is unique in that it is constantly developing prototypes with the added challenge of incredibly short lead-times. When it comes to precision, the smallest error can be the difference between winning and losing on the track. Take a closer look at how our CMM retrofit solution saved this prestigious F1 supplier in the region of £40K.
After an initial visit, Status suggested appraising the Mitutoyo and deemed it to be of a satisfactory condition to undertake a complete refurbishment process. The CMM was stripped and re-built including a full re-pipe and re-wire. A brand new Hexagon RC1 controller was fitted along with a Hexagon Jogbox, Dell PC Workstation and Hexagon’s market leading software, PC-DMIS Cad++. The whole process was completed in just one working week, before being tested and calibrated to a UKAS accredited standard.
Status was approached by this prestigious Formula One supplier, an industry leader in their own right, they work closely with ten of the twelve Formula One teams. The brief was to deliver a PC-DMIS powered Co-ordinated Measuring Machine and mitigate potential obsolescence issues from their Mitutoyo CMM. Improved inspection capabilities and ease of use were key factors with an option to introduce vision, laser and camera sensors at a later date. The client suggested that any solution should be PC-DMIS powered due to it being the preferred measurement inspection software package within their customer base.
To replace the CMM with a new machine would have cost upwards of £70,000 plus any removal and disposal costs of the Mitutoyo and come with a significant lead-time before delivery. The ‘Status Approved’ retrofit was implemented quickly and reduced the investment by circa £40,000 delivering a future proofed, cutting edge system with what’s widely considered to be global leading software, PC-DMIS.
